Diamond Supply and Rob Dyrdek Team Up to Open Up Diamond Supply Co. Skate Park

It’s always the greatest thing to hear of people with power giving back to the people who helped them created the platform and aura of success that they are in. Figures that give back to their fanatics deserve the highest of praises, and even more so when they invest in the community. Skateboarding legend Rob Dyrdek, along with founder of Diamond Supply Co., Nicky Diamond, invested in the construction of the Diamond Supply Co. Public Skate Park in the Boyle Heights section of Los Angeles. The skate park opened its doors to the public last week, and its initiation came through the efforts of the Rob Dyrdek Street League Skateboarding Foundation.
In yet another great display of collaboration, Dyrdek teamed up with Nicky Diamond, also a fellow professional skateboarder and well-known entrepreneur through his clothing line. Both collaborated with The California Endowment, a group that advocates for health equality, to fund the construction of the skate park. The first half of $320,000 was privately funded by Dyrdek’s foundation, through a grant from the Endowment, while the second half was donated by Diamond himself.
This is a more than commendable attempt to keep the culture of skateboarding by both of these men. Regardless of the immense success that both Nicky Diamond and Rob Dyrdek have found, this is proof that they are ready to give back to their loyal fan base at any moment. Moreover, actions like this inspire young aspirants to always keep their roots and culture in mind throughout the journey to success.

Glory is granted to those who risk everything…

Fashion and football (by football we mean soccer) at first thought sound like polar opposites. Reality is that football and fashion are knitted together very well. If you watch and follow football, primarily european football, you know that teams tend to look dapper and fitted while traveling. Not only is fashion and style incorporated off the pitch but on the pitch as well. We constantly see sponsors such as Nike and Adidas duel out to see who delivers the best kits and training jerseys.

This year Nike took the the off the pitch look to another level by releasing a commemorative collection called Nike F.C.

Lets take it back to the world cup of 1994… The location: a sunny summer day in Southern California inside the historic Rose Bowl of Pasadena where the following was stated – “Glory is granted to those who risk everything.” Nike F.C. was created to commemorate the willingness to win by players like that of Ronaldo, Figo, Cannavaro whom played with the utmost talent, passion, and did the necessary to ensure their team a victory by putting it all on the line while playing.

This Past April, Nike Sportswear unveiled the Nike F.C. collection using players like that of Jack Wilshire and Neymar to carry on the tradition… consisting of french terry pants and shorts, Nike F.C. logo t-shirts, a N98 jacket, crew neck sweatshirts, tiempo 94’s and a dri-fit jersey. All of which are stamped with the Nike F.C. logo which has  “Sem risco não há vitória,” the Nike F.C. motto embroidered on a crest on them which means without risk there is no victory in Portuguese.

The Fall Nike F.C. fall collection looks equally as promising. Paying tribute to the French capital and its clubs, the collection is shot in Paris with players Thiago Silva and Zlatan Ibrahimovic from PSG carrying the torch. The Collection will consist of the historic N98 track jackets again as well as polos, tech knit N98, pocket tees, and much more including the Winger GF Jacket which is now available on Nike.com. The rest of the collection currently has no release date but is set to be available at Nike Sportswear retailers sometime this fall.

Nolan and McConaughey Debut at 2014 Comic-Con

Arguably one of the biggest exhibits in all of Southern California, the annual Comic-Con convention held in San Diego during late July is one of the biggest events in our area. Thousands of fans migrate to San Diego as if the World Cup just took a break and moved a lot closer (Yes, I still miss the World Cup). This year, Comic-Con attendees and faithful fanatics of the comic or film industry got quite the surprise as Academy Award-winning actor Matthew McConaughey and worldwide critically acclaimed film director Christopher Nolan presented their new film Interstellar. Interstellar is about an engineer who joins a team of researchers and scientists in a quest to uncover the secrets to Earth’s saving after climate change has taken a toll on the planet.

This is quite the treat for film fanatics, as Nolan reveals that he has used more IMAX photography in this film than in any other, and small details of the film are to be slightly revealed as time passes. After all, it’s in Nolan’s personal style to keep secrecy of his projects as much as he can. Interstellar will premiere in American cinemas on November 7, 2014, and the cast includes well known actors such as Anne Hathaway, Topher Grace, and Michael Caine. As far as the official trailer for Interstellar, it is right above, so enjoy, and catch this at your nearby film theater. Nolan films just do not disappoint.

After 24 Years, Deutsche Fussball Wins Its Fourth Star

32 teams. 64 matches. More than 5,760 minutes of only the best football the world has to offer, and it all ended with a familiar footballing power reaching glory through its youth. Germany defeated Argentina last night at the 2014 FIFA World Cup Final in Rio de Janeiro’s Estádio do Maracanã. We were blessed by the football gods with quite the match, as both sides evenly attempted to settle the score, both keeper fought tooth and nail to keep their nets untouched, and the stalemate took more than the regular 90 minutes. This was the third consecutive final that needed additional time, and it did not disappoint. Die Mannschaft, after 23 minutes of extra time, prevailed as substitute Mario Götze scored in the 113th minute of additional extra time. Götze, commonly known as the future star of German football, replaced the now legendary Miroslav Klose, and became the first-ever substitute to score in a FIFA World Cup Final. Despite Italian referee Nicola Rizzoli’s questionable decisions during the match, and despite Lionel Messi and Los Albicelestes’ best efforts, Germany finally won its fourth star, its first since Italy 1990, and joined Italy as the nation with the second-most amount of World Cup trophies. More than millions of fans took the streets as Germany became the first European team to win football’s highest prize in a tournament held in the American continent. The end of the tournament rewards were also a point of debate for fans, as Lionel Messi won the FIFA Golden Ball, as the tournament’s best player. Colombia’s sensation, James Rodríguez, took home the FIFA Golden Boot with 6 goals in 5 matches. Manuel Neuer easily won the FIFA Golden Glove award for the tournament’s best goalkeeper, despite superb performances by Mexico’s Guillermo Ochoa and Costa Rica’s Keylor Navas. Brazil 2014 may be over, but it definitely has left a lasting memory on us. So we can only hope that the next 1,430 days go as quickly as possible, for Russia 2018. Until then, Deutschland… ist die Weltmeisterschaft.

2014 Paris Haute Couture Fashion Week Re-cap

“Haute couture”, we hear those two words thrown into pop culture shows, or magazines. The focus tends to gravitate towards the “ugly and the bad”. People know WHO was at the show, instead of what was actually showcased. Haute couture is harshly critiqued. To some, its art, to others, its the ugliest thing they’ve ever seen. Now, something people don’t understand that couture is meant to be over the top. It is not something you can wear on the street, it truly is art.

Artists over the years have always been criticized for being “outcasts”, or “rebels” of society. Some of the most famous and influential artists of our time were looked down upon because they were doing things “out of line”. They were “too over the top”, and considered uncivil. The only way to write history is to change the rules, and make your own. This is exactly what fashion designers do. They push the envelope to create a story in which the protagonists are the articles of clothing, and we are the spectators and readers. With that being said, “haute couture” derives from French meaning, “handmade dresses”, ultimately, stating that no sewing machines were used. Haute couture can be critiqued for being too much, but what some fail to see, is the immense work that seamstress do in order to create a masterpiece. Many of these designers only create one dress of a particular design, literally making it, “one-of-a-kind”. Each jewel or seam are delicately made by seamstresses that dedicate months, even years to one article of clothing. No machine can compete with what the hands are capable of. I have seen seamstresses sew each crystal, ever so carefully, their fingers look like ballet dancers moving graciously with a needle and thread. It truly is a magical experience to see.

The shows I decided to analyze are, Chanel, Christian Dior, Versace, and Jean Paul Gaultier. Chanel began their show in a classic, all white venue. The influence of this line derived from the attire of the 1800, specifically the structural silhouettes of the coats. The models wore structural coats with what appeared to be shorts underneath, and finished the look with bejeweled flip flops. The shoe choice, expressed the casualness of the outfit, by counterbalancing the very strong structural and heavy coats.  A couple of A-line dresses made their way into the show. All the pieces were heavily decorated with embellishments. Overall, the collection was very Chanel, I wouldn’t have expected anything less.

Christian Dior on the other hand shocked me with their collection. I have always been a fan of Dior haute couture because of their innovation, yet their loyalty to original silhouettes and feminine textiles. This collection however, showcased a more contemporary feel. There wasn’t any coherence in the collection, in my opinion. The collection began with classic signature Dior silhouettes in white, followed by dark jumpsuits and bright colored heels, while having some mini skirts. The collection continued with extremely long coats with basic undershirts and long bright colored trousers. Unfortunately, I did expect more from Dior.

Versace had an interesting smaller collection that, in my opinion played with paradoxes of tailored suits and floor length gowns. The collection showed pieces that were half gowns and half suits. Though everything was impeccably tailored, I failed to understand the message.

The Gaultier show had a rough start as their opening model fell multiple times on the runway. The runway itself looked like a hazard for stilettos. Gaultier is known for his over the top effect in his shows, so this collection did not take me by surprise. It had a very vampy, gothic feel, with a touch of flashback to the disco era. There was an overall dark feel to the collection with overwhelming metallics and reds. But what to expect, its Gaultier.

As ridiculous as an artist or designer maybe, let’s not be so quick to judge, usually they are the ones whom set the standard for the upcoming trends. Instead, let’s admire not the pieces of clothing that meets the eye, but the works of art that many hands have done. A round of applause for the true artists.
